Most health advice is written for simply: eat better, exercise more, get enough sleep, manage stress, and drink less alcohol. Those recommendations may point you in a healthier direction, but they don’t tell you what to do and what will actually work for you. They’re way too general to account for the differences that make up you: your biology, health history, daily life, and environment.
Unfortunately, federal guidelines for diet exercise are of absolutely no help. They recommend this wide range of 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening exercise at least twice a week, and tell us to eat whole, nutrient-dense foods. None of this is helpful. They don’t tell you what “moderate” means or how to actually do “muscle-strengthening” exercise, or what nutrient-dense foods look like. They also can’t tell you how your body will respond to these generic guidelines, whether the recommendation is right for you or your health, or how you are supposed to make it happen while managing work, travel, family responsibilities, and everything else that fills your week. This is why generic advice always falls apart. Two people can follow the same recommendation, interpret it differently, and get completely different results. One may feel better, lose weight, and see an improvement in blood sugar. The other may feel exhausted, see no change, or end up frustrated because the advice never accounted for what was happening in their body or their life.
Your Biology Changes How You Respond
Your genetics affect many parts of your health, including how your body responds to everything. One person may process a certain drug quickly while another processes it slowly or experiences side effects. Genetics also contributes to differences in metabolism and disease risk, but your genes are only one part of the picture. Your current health, habits, environment, and medications also affect the way your body responds. (National Human Genome Research Institute)
Food is another example. Two people can eat the same meal and have very different blood sugar and blood fat responses afterward. A study of more than 1,000 adults found wide differences in how people responded to the same meals, even among identical twins. Sleep, activity, meal timing, gut bacteria, and other individual factors helped explain some of those differences. That is why the same diet can work well for one person and do very little for someone else. (Nature Medicine)
Your gut microbiome also plays a role in how you digest food and use nutrients. The bacteria and other microorganisms living in your digestive system break down the food you eat. The makeup of that microbiome differs from one person to another and can change with diet, medication, illness, age, and environment. A food that causes no problem for one person may leave another person uncomfortable, bloated, or running to the bathroom. Telling both people to eat the same foods ignores how differently their digestive systems can respond. (National Human Genome Research Institute)
Hormones are not fixed either. They change with age, time of day, life stage, sleep, illness, medication, and other health conditions. Hormones help control metabolism, blood sugar, appetite, stress responses, reproductive function, and many other processes. This means advice about food, exercise, sleep, or weight may need to change when hormone levels or health conditions change. (MedlinePlus; MedlinePlus: Aging Changes in Hormone Production)
Metabolism is also more complicated than how quickly someone “burns calories.” Muscle mass, age, genetics, hormone levels, medications, sleep, activity, and health conditions can all affect how the body uses and stores energy. Two people can eat similar meals and exercise the same amount without seeing the same results. Giving both people the same food target or workout schedule doesn’t erase those differences.
Your Life Changes What You Can Actually Do
Your biology is only part of the reason generic advice fails. Your daily life affects what’s realistic.
Stress is a good example. Ongoing stress can interrupt sleep and affect blood sugar, blood pressure, and other physical processes. It can also change when you eat, what you reach for, how much energy you have, and whether you have the patience to prepare a meal or exercise at the end of the day. Telling someone to manage stress is easy. Figuring out what can change when the stress comes from a demanding job, a family problem, financial pressure, or caregiving is much harder. Sleep advice has the same problem. Healthy adults are generally advised to get at least seven hours of sleep each night, but the number of hours isn’t the only issue. Sleep quality, work schedules, travel, pain, hormonal symptoms, sleep apnea, insomnia, medication, stress, and nighttime caregiving can all affect recovery. “Get more sleep” does not tell someone what to do when pain wakes them up, their workday starts before sunrise, or they are caring for a family member during the night. Access to food matters too. Eating fresh, nutrient-dense food sounds simple when you can afford it, get to a store that sells it, and have enough time and energy to prepare it. That’s not everyone’s reality. Food prices, transportation, distance from a grocery store, work hours, family needs, and the types of food available nearby all affect what someone can buy and eat. Advice that ignores those things can leave people feeling as though they failed when the recommendation never fit their circumstances in the first place. (Healthy People 2030)
A full life adds another layer. A morning workout may mean giving up the extra hour of sleep you actually need. Client dinners may be a regular part of your job. Travel can change what food is available, when you can exercise, and how much time you have to recover. Family responsibilities can wipe out the time you expected to use for grocery shopping or a workout. A strategy that only works during a quiet, predictable week is not going to last very long.
Your Medical History Changes What Is Appropriate
Past injuries, current health conditions, unexplained symptoms, and medications can all change what advice is safe or useful.
Telling someone with knee pain to walk more can make the pain worse. Telling someone who is constantly exhausted to push harder in the gym is completely inappropriate, a thyroid condition, sleep apnea, an infection, medication, or another medical issue. Telling someone to make a major change to their diet without considering diabetes medication, digestive disease, kidney disease, food allergies, or a history of disordered eating can create another set of problems.
Medications can affect appetite, digestion, sleep, blood sugar, heart rate, exercise tolerance, and weight. They can also interact with supplements and certain foods. That doesn’t mean someone should stop taking a medication because they suspect it is affecting them. It means the medication needs to be included in the conversation, and any changes should be discussed with their doctor.
New, worsening, or unexplained symptoms also need medical evaluation. Generic lifestyle advice doesn’t rule out an illness, diagnose the cause of a symptom, or determine whether a treatment needs to change. Exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management may still be part of the strategy, but they shouldn’t be used to guess your way around a medical problem.
Useful Advice Has to Get Specific
Before deciding what to change, you need to look at what is actually going on. That includes your current health concerns, medical history, medications, injuries, lab results, sleep, stress, food access, schedule, responsibilities, and priorities. These details determine which recommendation deserves attention and what the change should look like.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that health counseling is more useful when it takes a person’s goals, health, abilities, circumstances, preferences, and environment into account. Access to grocery stores, safe places to exercise, transportation, and other local conditions can affect whether a recommendation is realistic. (U.S. Preventive Services Task Force)
Once those factors are clear, the advice can be turned into something you can actually use. You’ll decide which change should come first, what is realistic during a normal week, what needs to change when you travel, and what you’ll do when work or family responsibilities take over. You can also pay attention to how your body responds and adjust instead of assuming the recommendation should work simply because it worked for someone else.
Knowing what you’re “supposed” to do is not the same as knowing how to make it happen in your life.
